Exclusion Zone is a photographic series documenting the small Caribbean island and British Overseas Territory of Montserrat, 30 years after the Soufrière Hills volcanic eruption that left 80% of the island uninhabitable.
The eruptions catalysed a mass exodus, depopulating the island from 14,000 to now just over 4000 people: rendering it one of the world’s least populous countries. Those who stayed, internally migrated north to Brades - once the countryside, now the island’s supplanted capital. The uninhabitable land mass, known as the “Exclusion Zone”, is now an untouched and overgrown hinterland.
Three decades on from the eruptions, Exclusion Zone offers a timely moment to witness and celebrate the determination of Montserratian life.
